Signing my children up to play for Black Watch was one of the smartest things I did as a soccer parent. In games Black Watch teams always played hard and sought to win but the larger purpose was always learning and development: how to play the game right; how to develop the best version of themselves over the long run. Steve and his coaches never lost sight of that. They taught players how to play when they didn’t have the ball; which runs to make and why; which risks were worth taking when. Every player’s development was taken seriously. Maybe that’s why when my daughter arrived at college as a Freshman, her coach asked to be put in touch with Steve. She wanted more players who had been trained to understand the game at the highest level.
